GCC Water & Power Industries

With an estimated $120 Billion due to be invested in power and water projects over the next 10 years in the GCC region, the Gulf Water & Power Forum arrives at a time where the opportunities are endless.  

The move to launch the interconnector grid affirmed the close collaboration among GCC countries on addressing important power challenges, such as supply, security and reliability in the power sector, according to a press release issued on the occasion. Investment opportunities in the GCC power sector are estimated at a staggering  
$162 billion.

Here is just a highlight of the investments across the region:


BAHRAIN
  • The Bahrain government has planned to invest $1 billion to increase both power generation and distribution. 
  • GE has signed contracts totalling over $500 million to supply advanced power generation and water desalination for the Al Dur Independent Water and Power Project in the Kingdom of Bahrain
  • The 150,000-cm/d Muharraq sewage treatment plant is the first major fruit of Bahrain’s privatisation effort, and to ensure its success, the government has guaranteed effluent supplies and will off take all the treated water.

KUWAIT
  • GE Energy today announced that the Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water has signed a turnkey contract with GE and Hyundai Heavy Industries totalling $2.65 billion for a new, 2,000-megawatt (MW) power plant in Sabiya.
  • Ten projects in the water and waste segment planned worth $3.9 billion

OMAN
  • Muscat has proposed US$2bn in investment in the water sector over the 2006-2010
  • $191m project to create Majlis Oman, designed to be the sultanate's new iconic landmark is scheduled for completion in 2010

QATAR
  • Qatar Petroleum has completed the financing for a $3.32 billion power and water plant in the industrial port of Ras Laffan.  Due to be completed in 2011 aims to enhance power production to help meet the Gulf Arab country’s growing demand, generating around 2,730 mega watts of electricity, covering around 30 percent of the country’s needs. 
  • Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) has announced the audited financial statements for the nine months ended September 30, 2009 which revealed a net profit of QR719m compared with QR596m for the corresponding period in 2008, showing 21 percent growth.

SAUDI ARABIA
  • Ongoing power projects in the GCC have been estimated to be worth up to SAR 607.5 billion, with Saudi Arabia accounting for around 50 per cent of the total investments.
  • Saudi Arabia's state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corp. (SWCC) has estimated that through 2020, the country will need to spend at least $50 billion on water projects
  • The Saudi “National Water Company” has identified SR10 billion of investment opportunities in the next 2 years for developing water reservoirs and wastewater treatment plants in Riyadh and Jeddah.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
  • Abu Dhabi power demand is set to increase by 80% by 2012
  • Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) announce construction of two large power and water stations over the next two years
